Many do not realize that there are many differences of view within Conservatism. One does not need to become a liberal to have a different opinion.

That is the title of a debate between Victor Davis Hanson, Director of Classics at California State University, Fresno and Benjamin Powell, Director of the Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation at the Independent Institute and Assistant Professor of Economics at San Jose State University. The debate took place at University of Louisville on 3/6/2006 and was part of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) Cicero’s Podium: A Great Issues Debate Series.
Some points made are that previously in the United States’ history immigrants assimilated in to a culture of hard work and self-reliance. Now immigrants assimilate in to a welfare state. Illegal aliens reveal the degeneration of the United States’ political culture.
Today, the United States suffers from proclaiming new values. We are proud of being a nanny state. Immigrants compete with natives to obtain more benefits from the government sanctioned re-distribution of wealth. Our education system is more concerned with making pupils feel good, rather than learn substantive truths.
